Kelly DiPucchio: "Zombie in Love"

Author: Kelly DiPucchio
Illustrator: Scott Campbell
Title: Zombie in Love
Publisher: Atheneum, 2011

I just couldn't resist reviewing this book, even though it's aimed at the 4-8 crowd. Yes, this is a children's book, but adults will get a kick out of the cute story and great illustrations. What a perfect introduction to paranormal fiction for your favorite little ghoul—oops, I mean, girl—or boy.

Mortimer is a lonely zombie who is looking for love. He tries handing out gifts (e.g., a shiny red heart—unfortunately, a real heart—for his female mail carrier). He works out (but loses a few body parts). He walks his zombie dog. But nothing works.

Then, he has a great idea: a poignant (but hilarious) classified ad:

"If you like taking walks in the graveyard,
And falling down in the rain.
If you're not into cooking,
If you have half a brain...."

And so on. At the end of the ad, Mortimer suggests a romantic meeting at the Cupid's Ball on the following Saturday.

When he arrives at the ball, Mortimer sits alone by the punch bowl all night, but no one shows up to answer his ad, until....Well, I won't spoil the ending for you. Needless to say, it's an HEA for Mortimer.

I love this book. Even if you don't have a little one to read it to, you might want to give it to your sweetie for Valentine's Day.

Many thanks to my colleague, Susan, for bringing this one to my attention.
