Author: Cat Adams (Pseudonym for C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp)
In this somewhat convoluted series, the world is composed of two levels, the topside, ruled by humans (specifically, the queen of England) and Agathia, the underworld (literally, deep in the earth), run by the mages. The mages are divided into guilds (very medieval), each having specific powers related to the elements (e.g., fire, water, air).
Magic’s Design introduces the reader to this world with so much expositional material that the main plot line sometimes gets lost. Talos is a handsome, sexy firecrafter and a member of the Overworld Police. Mila is also a mage (a member of a banished guild), but her memory has been blocked, so she has trouble remembering her ability to wield magic. The couple gets involved in stopping the villainous Vegre (powerful fire mage) in his efforts to take over the world using magical Easter eggs and hybrid animals called squelks (squirrel + you know what). Now, mix in a weird religious cult, a sacred Tree of Life, and some Ukrainian folklore. It’s all well and good to take a fresh approach, but this plot line swings back and forth from strange to preposterous. I’m calling this a soul-mate romance (SMR) based on book 1 of the series.
